Rhinos are among the largest and most powerful land mammals on Earth, recognized for their massive bodies, thick skin, and distinctive horns. These ancient animals have existed for millions of years and continue to play an important role in the ecosystems they inhabit. Despite their intimidating appearance, rhinos are herbivores that feed on grasses, leaves, branches, and shrubs, helping maintain the balance of their natural environments. There are five living species of rhinoceros: the white rhino, black rhino, greater one-horned rhino, Sumatran rhino, and Javan rhino. White and black rhinos live in Africa, while the other three species inhabit parts of Asia. Each species has unique adaptations suited to its surroundings. African rhinos typically have two horns, while Asian rhinos generally have one. Their horns are made of keratin, the same protein found in human hair and fingernails. Rhinos inhabit a variety of environments, including grasslands, savannas, forests, and wetlands. Their feeding habits influence vegetation growth, while their movement through dense landscapes creates pathways used by other animals. Rhinos also help distribute nutrients and maintain healthy ecosystems. Although their eyesight is relatively poor, they rely on their excellent hearing and strong sense of smell to detect danger. Unfortunately, rhinos face serious threats from poaching, habitat destruction, and human-wildlife conflict. Their horns are illegally traded despite having no scientifically proven medicinal benefits. Conservation groups and wildlife rangers work to protect remaining populations through anti-poaching patrols, habitat preservation, breeding programs, and public education.
