Crocodiles are among the oldest and most formidable reptiles on Earth, with ancestors dating back more than 200 million years. These powerful predators inhabit tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas, living in rivers, lakes, wetlands, estuaries, and coastal waters. Their muscular bodies, armored skin, powerful tails, and elongated jaws make them exceptionally well adapted to life in aquatic environments. There are 14 recognized living species of crocodiles, ranging in size from relatively small species to the enormous saltwater crocodile, the largest living reptile. Crocodiles are ambush predators that rely on patience, stealth, and explosive bursts of speed to capture their prey. Their eyes and nostrils sit near the tops of their heads, allowing them to remain almost completely submerged while watching for potential meals. They feed on fish, birds, reptiles, and mammals, depending on their size and habitat. One of the most remarkable features of crocodiles is their powerful bite, supported by strong jaw muscles and rows of conical teeth. Unlike mammals, crocodiles continually replace their teeth throughout their lives. They are also excellent swimmers, using their muscular tails for propulsion and their webbed feet for maneuvering through the water. Despite their fearsome reputation, crocodiles often conserve energy by remaining motionless for long periods. Crocodiles demonstrate surprisingly complex parental behavior. Females typically lay eggs in nests made from vegetation or soil and guard them against predators. After hatching, young crocodiles may be carried gently to the water in their mother's mouth. Some mothers continue protecting their offspring for months, helping improve their chances of survival.
